How To Make a Steak Rub

Step 1 – Measure Ingredients

Using measuring spoons or weighing scales, measure out the correct amount of each ingredient.

This batch provides the right amount for approximately 2lbs of meat. If you want to store your rub for later use, scale your measurement sizes appropriately.

Step 2 – Combine & Mix

Combine all of your ingredients together in a mixing bowl & mix thoroughly until fully combined. During this process, you want to combine so thoroughly that you can’t tell which seasonings have been used (no groupings of any particular seasoning).

Step 3 – Use Or Store

Use the steak rub immediately by patting your meat carefully yet generously. Remember that rub adds incredible flavor to your meat, so be as generous as you like with the seasoning.

We recommend using this rub on just about any cut of steak. Our favorites for this rub are Smoked New York Steak or Amazing Smoked T-Bone Steak.

Alternatively, if you want to keep all or part of your rub for later use, use a funnel to pour your seasoning into an airtight container. If you have a silica anti-moisture pack, place this inside the container to keep the rub fresher for longer. Store your container in a cool, dry place, and your rub can last for months.

Steak Rub FAQs

Some backyard enthusiasts say that salt and pepper are all you need for the perfect flame-grilled steak. However, we love using this simple steak rub instead, comprising of salt, pepper, garlic powder, thyme, rosemary, onion powder, and smoked paprika.

What’s The Best Way To Season Steak?

We recommend applying a generous amount of seasoning to all sides of the steak and refrigerating it for a minimum of 30 minutes to allow the flavours to melt into the meat.

How Do I Store Homemade Steak Rub?

Homemade steak rub should last around six months when stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you have a silica packet, add it to your rub to ensure moisture stays out.
