How To Make Smoked Chicken Wings

Step 1 – Preheat Your Smoker

Start your smoker and get the temperature stable at 325ºF.

Step 2 – Prepare & Rub

Using a dry rub will create a crunchy coating, the perfect texture for your chicken wings. Be creative with the seasonings you choose, or use our tried and true Chicken Rub Recipe.

Coat wings entirely with your rub of choice.

Step 3- Smoke Chicken Wings

Place the seasoned chicken wings directly on the smoker grill and cook until the wings reach an internal temperature of 165ºF.

Step 4 – Coat With Sauce

Transfer the wings into an aluminum pan and coat with the BBQ sauce, or any sauce of your choosing.

Step 5 – Second Smoke

Reduce the smoker temperature to 250ºF and place the pan on the grill. Smoke the wings for 1 hour, uncovered.

Step 6 – Serve

Remove the grill and enjoy!

Tips For Making Smoked Chicken Wings

  • Mix It Up. We like to test various wing seasonings and sauces to mix up the flavours. Try making half Buffalo wings or half Sweet and Spicy.
  • Dipping Sauce. These Smoked Chicken Wings are amazing on their own, but having a side of ranch or caesar dressing can take them to the next level.

Smoked Chicken Wing FAQs

How long does it take to smoke wings?

It takes about an hour and a half to smoke your chicken wings. Our advice though is to always check the internal temperature of your meat, instead of just relying on cooking time. Some smokers or grills will cook differently, so always check to make sure they’ve reached the recommended internal temperature.

Do I have to brine my chicken wings before smoking?

We recommend always brining your chicken before smoking. Brine is a simple salt and water mixture. The salt brine enhances the texture, flavour, and, most importantly, the moisture of the chicken. By soaking your chicken in a brine prior to smoking, you’ll taste a noticeable improvement in your chicken.

How do I get the skin crispy on smoked chicken wings?

To get the crispy skin on your smoked chicken wings, you can quickly boil your chicken wings for about 5 minutes before adding them to your smoker. This will render the layer of fat under the skin that will help enhance that crispy skin.
