Smashed Potatoes
Some nights, all you need is a solid, satisfying side dish that doesn’t take a ton of effort but still delivers on flavor. That’s exactly how this recipe came to life. I had a bag of little potatoes, some leftover cheese, and a craving for something buttery and savory.
I reached for Ivory Heaven — a rich, garlicky seasoning that elevates any side — and whipped up this fast, foolproof dish. It’s now a go-to in our house and always a hit with guests.
How to Make Smashed Little Potatoes with Ivory Heaven
Preparation
Start by getting a large pot of salted water on the stove and bringing it to a boil. While the water heats up, prep the rest of your ingredients. If you want the potatoes to cook faster, slice them in half — but that step’s totally optional. Dice your green onions, grate your cheese, and measure out your butter now so you’re ready once the potatoes are done.
Cooking the Potatoes
When the water reaches a boil, carefully add the potatoes. Let them boil until fork-tender, about 12–15 minutes depending on size. Once cooked, strain the potatoes and return them to the hot pot — the residual heat helps dry out any excess moisture. Add your butter, Ivory Heaven seasoning, grated cheese, and green onions. Then mash everything together until smooth but still rustic with a few chunks for texture. Add a splash of milk or cream and keep mashing until it’s silky and luscious.
Serving
Spoon the hot smashed potatoes into a serving dish or serve them straight from the pot for a rustic touch. For extra flavor, garnish with more green onions or an extra dusting of seasoning. These potatoes are best served hot, right alongside your BBQ chicken, ribs, steak, or brisket.
Best Beer to Pair With Smashed Potatoes
Pale Ale
A crisp pale ale balances the richness of the butter and cheese, and its mild hops bring out the seasoning’s savory notes.
Amber Lager
Smooth, malty, and slightly sweet, amber lagers pair beautifully with the earthy creaminess of potatoes and mild cheese.
Cream Ale
Soft and easy-drinking, cream ales echo the buttery texture of the dish without overpowering it.
